주택 유지 비용(Housing costs)은 소득대비 주거 비용 비율(income-to-shelter-cost ratio)로 주택구매력과 연관이 있음.
런던 외의 캐나다 주택 소유자들은 더 많은 비율의 소득을 주택 유지비에 사용하고 있음. 2006년 기준으로 캐나다 전체 주택 소유자들의 25% 정도가 가구 소득의 30% 이상을 주택 유지비용으로 지출하고 있음.
낮은 이자율( 6.5%, 1990년대 이자율의 절반 수준) 또한 낮은 주택 유지비용에 기여함.

Grocery and gasoline prices are soaring, but that doesnt mean Londoners have had to dig deeper into their wallets to cover the costs of housing. The average household in the London area spent 19 per cent of its income on housing and shelter in 2006 — about the same amount spent five years earlier, according to a Statistics Canada report released yesterday.
Housing costs are estimated based on an income-to-shelter-cost ratio, which determines the affordability of housing.
Outside London, Canadians are spending more on housing. One-quarter of Canadian households spent 30 per cent or more of their income on shelter in 2006, slightly more than in 2001.
Londoner Igor Mucha, 28, and his girlfriend, Kasia Ilczuk, 24, decided last week to buy their first home, in north London.
They had been living at home with their parents and were able to save money for their own house.
“With our combined income, we were able to save for a 20 per cent down payment,” Mucha said yesterday.
While some might fear signing a housing deal in the face of an economic downturn, Mucha said he considers the couples purchase a long-term investment.
They both have stable jobs — hes a truck driver, shes in customer service — and felt ready for the move, he said.
“It was a financially sound idea for us.”
Thats because buying a home in the London area has “never been easier,” said Bruce Sworik, president of the London St. Thomas Association of Realtors.
“Our housing prices are very realistic and are at a very good value,” he said.
Interest rates have dropped, making it easier to cover monthly and yearly mortgage payments, Sworik said. Home interest rates hover around 6.5 per cent, about one-half the rates in the 1990s.
“Many of us have bought housing as an investment,” he said.
Some people may decide to use alternative modes of transportation to get around or spend less money on food, but when it comes to shelter, “there are no other alternatives,” he said.
The median cost of housing in the London area two years ago was $9,649 a year — or $804 a month.
In 2001, the median housing cost for homeowners with a mortgage was $15,420 a year, or 20.2 per cent of their income.
Those without a mortgage spent $5,772 a year, or nine per cent of their income.
Those costs include mortgage payments, property taxes, condo fees and utilities.
The lower interest rates have offset rising housing costs, said marketing analyst David Lan of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. Housing prices have increased six to 10 per cent annually since 2001, he said.
Still, more people than ever resold a home last year. In London, St. Thomas and the surrounding area, 9,686 units were sold, Lan said.
